Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, the vice chancellor of Makerere university has recommended full vaccination of all students prior full reopening of the institution.
According to Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, only 7000 students have been vaccinated, as per the statistics from the university hospital, which accounts for only 20% of the students -not even half the intended target.
VC Nawangwe revealed this in a letter dated 25th January, 2022 addressed to the 87th guild speaker. Professor Nawangwe thus urged the students leadership to work closely with management in order to achieve this goal.
“I urge the GRC to work closely with management to ensure full vaccination of our students to enable us re-open the University fully.” part of the letter reads.
This revelation raised eyebrows of many students, and the GRC alike, as their hopes of having the university fully reopen this semester were blown off.
In the same letter, the VC directed the directorate of ICT to train GRCs who would render the service back to freshers that are not well acquainted with cut-edge technology which is a requisite for online activities such as e-learning.
The 87th guild house had earlier wrote to the Vice Chancellor expressing their grievances with the online learning system; which they said: doesn’t give learners adequate time for consultation, and further alleged that quite a number of lecturers cancel lectures due to technical glitches. Besides, the GRC noted that most universities had fully reopened for physical learning.
Besides, the GRC had began a social media campaign of ‘no bending for blending’ aimed at championing the cause of having the university fully reopen for all students.
With the onset of covid-19, most institutions resolved to offer blended learning in order to limit crowds and Makerere university was no exception.
However, despite the full reopening of the economy, quite a number of institutions are stuck with blended learning and Makerere university seems to have mastered this art too.
