The Ivory Tower Continental rankings seem not to be dropping anytime soon if their continental performances are anything to go by. On the evening of the 4th day November, 2015, a two man team from Makerere brushed aside 7 law schools before emerging best in the 3rd Disability Rights Moot court competition held in Pretoria, South Africa.
The two man team from Makerere made up of Judith Aboto, LLB3 and Joseph Byomuhangyi, LLB3 put up a good legal fight in securing the legal brains crown. It should be noted that this was Makerere University’s first shot at the regional crown. Makerere university beat, Chancellor College (Malawi), University of Zambia (Zambia), Midlands State University (Zimbabwe), Eduardo Mondlane University (Mozambique), University of Botswana (Botswana), University of Namibia (Namibia), University of Dodoma (Tanzania), and University of Nairobi (Kenya).
A moot court competition is a a legal debate that takes the form of mock court hearings. Participant law schools forwarded names of lecturers who adjudicated the moot. The African Disability Rights Moot Court Competition is a pioneering annual gathering on the continent of students and lecturers of law on the subject of disability.
The moot competition was established in 2013 as part of an OSF funded project to promote disability rights awareness, education and scholarship in Southern Africa, and in Africa more broadly.
The Competition aims to prepare a new generation of lawyers to argue cases of alleged disability rights violations before the newly established African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights which is operational since 2008.
The programme is organised each year by the Centre for Human Rights, and is held at the University of Pretoria. Participants argued the hypothetical case of Susan, a 16½ years old woman with disabilities and citizen of Sena who has been denied contraception and is seeking to challenge the refusal on the grounds that it violates her fundamental rights under the Constitution.
The 3rd African Disability Rights Moot Court Competition featured two rounds: a preliminary round held on 2nd November and a final round held on 4th November 2015. Congratulations to the two representatives.
