Makerere University (MUK) debating team has been crowned the winner of the two days tax debate that took place at Uganda Christian University, Mukono winning the debate for the second time in a row.
The debate started on the 6th November until 7th, the final day of the debate from the ICMI building at UCU.
Just like it was last year 2017, MUK competed against the host university, UCU to be declared the winner of the SEATINI debate. The debate was organized by SEATINI, the (Southern and East Africa Information and Negotiation Institute), in partnership with UCU Law faculty, ActionAid, Oxfam and the Youth Tax Justice Network.
A total of 12 universities were represented with each university sending 2 teams to debate on the different motions of the debate.
The students debated 6 motions in six different rounds under the theme “Advancing the tax agenda of Uganda, the role of the youth”.
The debate was premised on three objectives to train students in taxation and tax justice provide a platform for students to debate development issues and to cement ties with academic institutions within Uganda which were achieved in the heated discussions between the universities.
