Makerere University has won a grant from Mastercard foundation that will help in boosting its e-learning.
The two million dollar (UGX 7.6 billion) grant will be used to establish a project dubbed the e-learning initiative.
The project will help address negative impacts of COVID-19 through enlivening the Makerere University e-learning Environment (MUELE).
The e-learning initiative will develop high quality and inclusive academic online content, learner support services and enhance access to and utilization of online content.
The Project was officially launched on 20th September, 2022 in an event graced by Prof. Mary Okwakol, the executive director National Council for Higher Education.
Speaking at the launch, Prof. Mary Okwakol urged institutions to train teachers and equip them with e-learning knowledge.
“I hope that as we implement this new mode of teaching and learning we can address some of the challenges that come with it. Many of our teachers do not have enough knowledge of content development for online teaching material and I believe this is the situation in most of our institutions. If a member of staff mastered these skills, that will set him apart from another member of staff and doesn’t matter whether you are a member of the academic staff one administrator,” she said.
Prof. Okwakol also noted that online learning requires a lot of flexibility which is a necessity in today’s world.
Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, the vice chancellor Makerere University thanked Mastercard foundation for the support rendered to the university.
During the launch, the audience listened to a video clip from Reeta Roy, the President and CEO of Mastercard Foundation.
Ms Reeta Roy remarked that the work of Mastercard Foundation is about education, leadership development, giving back to community, and transformation of lives.
