Shamim Nambassa, Makerere university’s 87th guild president has decried the suspension of colleagues by the institution’s care taker Professor Barnabas Nawangwe.
In her Facebook live session on saturday 5th February, Nambassa alleged that VC Nawangwe was threatening and issuing warning letters to students who are against the university’s blended system of learning.
The decry comes only days after Makerere university’s VC Professor Barnabas Nawangwe issued warning letters to some students notable of these being a one Joel Muleyi who is accussed of bullying and harrasing freshers as well as destroying students property at Lumumba hall.
Professor Barnabas Nawangwe had earlier vowed to deal (unsparingly) with all those planning to cause unrest at the institution. This came after being rumoured that the 87th guild leadership was boiling up a strike in protest of the university’s blended system of learning.
A dismayed Shamim Nambassa furthered called upon the country to join her in their pursuit for full re-opening of the university; calling upon all Makerere students to report to campus on 7th February despite anticipation of heavy police deployment on the same day.
“Its time you come out and fight for us. This is not about us, its about Uganda,” Nambassa noted.
“We believe we have done all it takes. We have observed SOPs. We are now going to use the language they understand,” Nambassa asserted. “This is now war.” she added.
Makerere’s 87th guild president says that the blended system of learning is only as good as bad. She alleged that lecturers teach only four times a semester and accused them of losing students’ exam scripts thus delayed release of results of the previous semester.
Nambassa also believes the quality of the institution’s products has deteriorated, and that students are being denied internship placements because of this mode of learning.
“Students are being denied internship; they are being referred to as YouTube students,” Nambassa said.
Makerere university’s 87th guild now looks forward to using ‘disturbing’ measures in order to pressure the Vice chancellor into changing his position on the mode of teaching for semester one academic year 2021/2022.
The Bee has leant that the 87th guild intends to hold protests on Monday 7th February, 2022 in order to table their demand for full reopening of the university in a different style.
