Makerere University strong-willed political figure Hadijah Mutesi is set to run for the Uganda National Students Association (UNSA) Vice President seat in the forthcoming elections.
The elections which are set to commence from Dec 16 to 19th 2022 will see the ushering in of new UNSA leaders to power at different levels.
According to Mutesi, the most burning issue that pushed for her cause is to serve equality for all students across the country.
“You find that some students are left behind in case of any opportunity that surfaces. I am pushing to ensure that services reach out to all students,” she notes.
The outspoken iron lady has vowed to ensure a student-centered body to solve grievances for all,
“We demand and envision a student led UNSA in all practicality. A leadership that is inclusive, consultative and truthful,” Mutesi added.
She promised pave a way for scholarships towards students from the most underprivileged families.
“Underprivileged students should be prioritised when it comes to getting access to education. I seek to lobby extensively for scholarships and bridge that gap,” she pledged.
The third year Bachelor of Journalism and Communication student has pledged to push for accountability during her regime as the Vice President. “
For any body to thrive, there is need for accountability and transparency. As leaders of the now generation, a generation with us youths forming a critical mass, we intend to demand for a more inclusive and accountable UNSA of all the times.“
In her leadership journey, Mutesi started serving as early as primary standing as the Head girl of her former school, pioneered promoting students talents during her secondary level and stood for the rights of fellow students.
At Makerere University, she started her political journey in year one as the Deputy Speaker at the School of Languages, Literature and Communication.
She didn’t stop at that, still in her first year, Mutesi was voted as the Guild Representative Councilor (GRC) at the same school.
Volunteered in Abenakyo foundation, championed for the construction of more halls of residence for ladies at Makerere University.
The same lady participated in the medical students fight for allowances that deliberated all medical students to start earning their allowance.
She went ahead to champion for the release of students marks for students which is a serious issue at Makerere University.
In addition to that; she championed the EACOP project, mobilized and exposed the evil actions at different levels through her socials.
Hadijah pushed for the support of the starving people in Karamoja.
During her leadership at Makerere University, she championed for a mentorship program using the Guild Female caucus where she oriented fresh women and continuing students who are passionate about leadership.
On different occasions, she has participated in different development activities. The most recently was one involving participants in the 2022 employment Amendment bill, travelled upcountry to establish different challenges students encounter.
Having been raised from a humble background, Mutesi has tried hard to touch on lives of suffering Ugandans and as well stand as an inspiration to many girls.
During the Makerere University Guild trip to Arusha in Tanzania, she tabled peaceful conflict resolutions at the borders of East African countries.
UNSA is a democratically elected National Students Council (NSC) formed under Section 30 of the Education Act.
District Executive Councils (DEC), who elect the NSC, also establish the National Executive Council (NEC) and Board of trustees.
UNSA, as constituted, is the voice and support of students in post primary academic institutions under the official Patronage of the President of the Republic of Uganda.
