Makerere University is preparing for a momentous occasion with the scheduled reopening of its iconic main building, which was devastated by a fire in 2020.
The official reopening is set for October 2, 2024, and will be graced by President Yoweri Museveni.
The building, often referred to as the “Ivory Tower,” has been an emblem of the university’s rich history and academic excellence.
The restoration of this historic landmark has been eagerly anticipated, as it symbolizes not just the physical rebuilding of a structure but also the resilience and forward-looking spirit of Makerere University.
The renovated building is expected to serve as the administrative hub of the university, blending its historical architecture with modern amenities to support the university’s ongoing mission of advancing knowledge and education in Africa.
This reopening is part of a broader effort by Makerere University to modernize its facilities and enhance the learning environment for its students and staff.
The reopening is also expected to witness the commissioning a new building at School of Law, completion and ongoing renovations of Halls—Lumumba and Mary Stuart.
