Automobile manufacturing project, Kiira Motor Corporation that is owned by Makerere University having innovated Africa’s first electric, hybrid and solar electric vehicles in 2011, 2014 and 2016 respectively is now set to create over 2000 jobs once fully in operation.
During a Twitter live chat where he was giving an update on the Bio-Safety and Bio-Technology Bill, Hon. Ssekitooleko Kafeero the chairperson of the parliamentary committee on Science and Technology said that the Kiira project is expected to facilitate manufacturing of vehicles and motorcycle parts later this year and this is expected to attract market and opportunities for Ugandans both directly and indirectly.
“Kiira Motors will create 940 jobs at the initial stage, 2000 direct jobs when fully operational and 12, 000 indirect jobs.” – The Nakifuma County Member of Parliament said in a tweet.
He went on to say the project that has been under funding since its launch in mid 2011 by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is now ready to commence as government has already facilitated it with 140 billion shillings.
“The project will have a production capacity of 5000 cars per year and the government offered it land in the Jinja Industrial Park and water is being extended to the site.” – He said
The manufacture of cars on the Country’s soil means such vehicles will be cheaper and affordable for majority of the locals as its taxation imposed on imported cars that makes them expensive.
