Makerere university administration is considering closing Mitchel Hall, one of Makerere’s male Halls of residence over its violent culture that has become monotonous with University Hall (UH).

In a letter dated March 7th,2022, addressed to the chairperson and members of Mitchel’s senior common room executive committee, the university administration blamed the leaders for failure to avail members that led an attack on University Hall on Sunday 6th March 2022.

Some members of Mitchel hall blocked roads and made a violent attack on University Hall their immediate neighbour destroying a lot of property.

The university administration, through the acting Vice Chancellor Professor Henry Alinaitwe has tasked Mitchel hall leadership to give reason why the hall should not be closed by Wednesday 9th March.

“Under the circumstance, Management is considering the option of closing Mitchel hall as investigations to identify the perpetrators continue. The closure may also continue until a solution to the perpetual culture of violence is established.” Part of the letter reads.

“The management has recommended that the student leadership of the hall be given a chance to explain the matter and show cause why the hall should not be closed,” the letter continues.

According to close sources, four Mitchel hall students have been suspended so far in regards to the Sunday attack. Howbeit, the hall leadership says they are known for being disciplined and that the students were only returning from clubs.

“We Mitchellites are known for being disciplined. And these our colleagues were returning from clubs in the city which has never been an offence in the regulations of this university or national laws.” Part of the communication from Mitchel SCR reads.

According to Makerere university rules and regulations rule 6(4) on students’ conduct and discipline, drinking alcohol and behaving in a manner that breaches peace, either on or off the university premises, shall constitute an offence.

When asked why Mitchel hall attacked them on Sunday night, Muhammed Kiggundu, the GRC University Hall said its nothing but an attempt to show superiority.

Mr Adupa, the chairman Mitchel hall says they have had an emergency meeting and prepared the reply to management as per the request to defend themselves by 10th March.

The Bee has learnt that University Hall has also been warned and given a letter similar to that of Mitchel hall.
