Makerere University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, has been named the African Leadership Magazine Person of the Year, 2024, recognizing his outstanding contributions to education and leadership on the continent.

The prestigious award was presented to him by Dr. Jakaya Kikwete, former President of Tanzania and Chairman of the African Leadership Magazine (ALM) Board, at a glamorous ceremony held at the Marriott Casablanca Hotel in Morocco. The event saw the presence of key African dignitaries, including Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina, who was the chief guest.

In addition to the ALM award, Prof. Nawangwe also received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the South Carolina House of Representatives for his transformative role in education and research in Africa. The award, introduced by Representative Henderson-Myers and other House members, commends his visionary leadership in elevating Makerere University to a globally competitive, research-intensive institution.
