Makerere University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, has been named the African Leadership Magazine Person of the Year, 2024, recognizing his outstanding contributions to education and leadership on the continent.
The prestigious award was presented to him by Dr. Jakaya Kikwete, former President of Tanzania and Chairman of the African Leadership Magazine (ALM) Board, at a glamorous ceremony held at the Marriott Casablanca Hotel in Morocco. The event saw the presence of key African dignitaries, including Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina, who was the chief guest.
In addition to the ALM award, Prof. Nawangwe also received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the South Carolina House of Representatives for his transformative role in education and research in Africa. The award, introduced by Representative Henderson-Myers and other House members, commends his visionary leadership in elevating Makerere University to a globally competitive, research-intensive institution.
The South Carolina House Resolution recognized Prof. Nawangwe’s impact as Vice Chancellor since August 2017, highlighting:
- Expansion of research and technology at Makerere
- Strengthening global partnerships and policy reforms
- Driving investments in infrastructure development
- Pioneering the establishment of Kiira Motors Corporation, Africa’s first electric vehicle manufacturer, in which Makerere holds a 4% stake
Beyond his role at Makerere, Prof. Nawangwe is a respected academic leader serving on multiple global education boards. He is the Chair of the Alliance for African Partnerships, Vice Chair of the Australia Africa Universities Network, and a Council Member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.
Upon receiving the awards, Prof. Nawangwe expressed gratitude to the ALM and the South Carolina House of Representatives, saying:
“I am deeply grateful to the voters across Africa who recognized my efforts, as well as the dedicated staff and students of Makerere University, whose hard work and commitment have made this achievement possible.”
