Makerere University students’ leaders have joined the fight against corruption in Uganda with the launch of the national students participation in the fight against corruption.
The launch was spearhead by Makerere’s 90th guild president Vincent Lubega Nsamba during the anti-coruption dialogue held at Makerere University on September 13th, 2024.
The dialogue was organised under the theme: “Universities Without Walls: Revolutionising University Institutions as the Engine for Transformational Sustainability”.
Brig. Gen. Henry Isoke, the head of State House Anti-Corruption Unit and event’s chief guest urged students to ponder about what they have done to fight corruption before blaming government.
“As much as you blame the government, what have you done to ensure that corruption is fought? Each one of us has a role to play,” he said.
Adding; “As intellectuals, you must study policy and not just run around with negativity. Be independent and analytical”.
Col. Edith Nakalema, head state house investors protection unit, thanked the organisers of the dialogue and commended those that engage in discussions that drive national transformation.
“We appreciate the organisers of this dialogue and commend those who will continue to engage in discussions that drive national transformation,” she said.
Makerere VC Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe thanked the students guild for resuming the Mak guild dialogues amd promised to support them in organising more dialogues.
Prof. Nawangwe also scoffed at those who are branding Makerere as a ‘glorified secondary school’ saying that no glorified secondary school can develop electric cars.
The anti-graft dialogue comes at a time when Uganda is witnessing series of anti-graft protests.
