Makerere University’s 89th guild president Maseruka Robert has extended his ‘save a makererean’ campaign to parliament.
Maseruka reached out to parliament, through the Kampala central MP Muhammad Nsereko, and pleaded with legislators to join the fight to save thousands of students that are likely to dropout of school due to tuition challenges.
Maseruka’s plea was presented by Mohammed Nsereko during plenary on Thursday October 19th, 2023.
Nsereko said about 3000 students from Makerere University will miss graduation because of pending fees balances that made it impossible for them to seat their final examinations.
“It’s absurd that 7,000 students and children of this country shall miss out on graduation in different institutions, and about 3,000 students from Makerere University because most of them had paid tuition and were denied access to sitting the exams,”he said.
Nsereko said some students have accumulated unpaid tuition due to the financially challenging times Uganda has been through such as Covid-19, and as a result, they are unable to pay this money to graduate.
The Kampala central legislator said some students want to commit suicide because of the financial hardships that have made it impossible for them to graduate. Nsereko requested parliament to come up with a solution in order to save the students.
Among Nsereko’s prayers, he requested that government permits all students to graduate regardless of their tuition balances so that they can be able to secure jobs and pay the money they owe the institution.
The plea to parliament by Makerere University guild leaders comes after the guild president launched a campaign dubbed ‘save a Makererean’ with an intent of soliciting funds to help financially struggling students.
