Makerere University has launched the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP), an initiative by the first lady and minister of education and sports Hon. Janet Museveni.

The program was launched on October 19th, 2023 at Esella Country hotel, and saw about 185 participants, including both student leaders and lecturers, come together to attain diverse life skills.

The first session of ELP will feature a three-day orientation workshop that will run from October 19th to October 21st.

The three—day orientation workshop has been organized to introduce the Emerging Leaders Program, an initiative of the First Lady, Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni, to give participants exposure to the program content with the aim of enlisting them as one of the program participants and/or implementors during its course of implementation.

The workshop, implemented by LIFE Ministry Uganda and The Global Leadership Summit was curated to target Makerere University teaching staff and all University student leaders.

ELP is expected to promote positive character development through life skills and character education, equip students with skills and knowledge on values-based lifestyles to enable healthy behavioral choices, and train trainers to facilitate the Emerging Leaders program within the University.

ELP will also feature a Leaders Capacity Building Program, and a behavioral change campaign dubbed The SAFE Campaign.

The Emerging Leaders Capacity Building will be held early in Quarter one of 2024 to equip Guild leaders and lecturers with the necessary skills to take on the program and create ownership in implementation. The training will be founded on a life skills and character development curriculum with six (6) units and thirty (30) lessons, taught in a 5-day training workshop.

While The SAFE Campaign is a series of innovative lifestyle and communication interventions aiming to improve the knowledge, motivation, and risk perceptions, skills, norms, and supportive environment of morality and integrity, correspondingly transforming the University’s outputs on Education and Economic development.
