The minister of education and sports Mrs. Janet Museveni launched the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) at Makerere University on Friday, September 27, 2024.
ELP is an initiative by the minister of education aimed at fighting corruption and HIV/AIDS.
The minister thanked Makerere University for developing the program (ELP) which she said will instill leadership skills among university students.
“I thank the leaders of Makerere University, the Global Leadership Summit and Life Ministry Uganda for taking up the challenge to craft a program that will instill character development and leadership skills in university students in the country,” she said.
She further said she wishes the program is expanded to all universities in Uganda.
“My desire is that this program expands beyond Makerere University to all universities across Uganda. I pray that God will make that possible,” she added.
Makerere University VC Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe thanked the minister of education for her commitment in saving leaders from destruction. He also thanked the guild leadership for implementing activities that complete the efforts of ELP such as the Drug Hatari campaign initiated by the guild vice president Joy Eve Sserunjogi.
“The Guild Leadership has displayed a high level of maturity and they have implemented activities that complement the efforts of the Emerging Leaders Programme, particularly the fight against substance abuse and I congratulate them,” he said.
Mrs. Lorna Magara, chairperson Makerere University Council, said there is need to raise generations of value-based people committed to serving and transforming their communities.
“the ELP strategic plans have been laid out, and the work has started in earnest, undergirded by prayer. This is a legacy project that will outlive us, so we must plan for its continuity. We must continue raising generations of value-based people committed to serving and transforming their communities. The development of Uganda and Africa hinges on the quality of the people,” she said.
ELP will be rolled out across different universities and institutions of learning in Uganda. The program was first launched at Makerere University.
The program was an outcome of a request by Hon. Janet Museveni to Makerere University council to join her efforts in fighting corruption and HIV/AIDS.
