Makerere University has officially handed over Marystuart Hall to National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) for renovation.
Marystuart Hall that has been in existence since 1945 will be the second hall to be renovated after Lumumba hall. The renovation works were flagged off on May 31, 2024.
While handing over the hall, Mak VC Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe thanked the government for its ‘visionary leadership’ and for funding the hall renovation project.
“I want to thank president Museveni and the government for that visionary leadership. We have been singing about hall renovation long before I came to Makerere. We sang about the perimeter wall 30 years ago. We are going to get all the money we need to renovate our halls of residences,” he said.
Nawangwe urged the contractor to renovate the hall and give it a befitting look because it is the ‘face of the university’ given its height that makes it visible from afar.
Lt. Gen. James Mugira , MD NEC, thanked the university management for entrusting NEC with the renovation project and promised to deliver to the expected standards.
“I thank Makerere University for always trusting us with such big projects. This is the third project we are undertaking and I can assure you that we shall not disappoint you. We shall try as much as possible to complete this work in time and at a relatively cheaper cost,” Mugira said.
Ms. Winifred Kabumbuli, Mak Dean of students noted that the renovation of the halls will improve the wellbeing of Makerere University students. She said the renovation project is about ‘enhancing the future of Makerere University and the future of our students’.
The renovation of Marystuart Hall will cost UGX 10.5 billion. In the meantime, Marystuart Hall residents will occupy the yet to be reopened Lumumba hall.
