Makerere University teaching staff were trained and equipped with skills in competence based education during a three-day pedagogy and professionalism workshop that was concluded on February 21st, 2025 at a ceremony held at the College of Business Management conference hall.
The workshop organised by the office of the deputy vice chancellor academic affairs and the centre of teaching and learning support saw at least 50 staff, with five selected from each of the ten colleges, participate in the training.
Dr. Dorothy Kyagaba, the training coordinator thanked the deputy vice chancellor in charge of academic affairs for supporting the workshop and urged the participants to use the knowledge acquired in their teaching practice.
Assoc. Prof. Mathias Mulumba Bwanika, Dean school of education said there is need to prepare lecturers to be able to effectively teach students from secondary school that have undergone the new competence based curriculum.
“We must he ready to receive students who have been trained through the competence based curricular. We are trying different competence based eaching methodologies so that teaching is not boring,” he said.
Prof. Buyinza Mukadazi, deputy vice chancellor in charge of academic affairs said different teaching methods must be employed to meet the diverse needs of students, adding that the only way to remain relevant in the academia is looking for emerging developments and learning new technologies.
“There is no other way of remaining relevant in the academia other than looking for emerging developments. We have students of diverse needs and we must think of different methods to meet these needs,” he said.
Prof. Mukadazi also noted that the training will be rolled out at the different colleges within the university so that all lecturers are equipped with competence based teaching skills.
The next cohort will target leaders at college level such as the Principals, Deans and Heads of Departments.
