Buganda’s Nnaabagereka Sylvia Nagginda will visit Makerere University where she will be speaking at the Sarah Ntiro public lecture.
Nnaabagereka is expected to deliver a message on how women can be pillars of society during this year’s Sarah Ntiro public lecture on August 31st.
The Buganda queen will share a panel with Anne Juuko, Anna Reismann and Else Attafuah. This year’s Sarah Ntiro public lecture will focus on the theme ‘Catalyzing change: women as pillars of society’.
The Nnaabagereka, reflecting on her journey as written in her book The Nnaabagereka , will inspire women to embrace responsibility and champion change.
Sarah Ntiro Nyendwoha was both an alumna and staff of Makerere University. In 1951, Sarah Ntiro Nyendwoha, joined University of Oxford and graduated in 1954 with a Bachelor’s degreein History, becoming the first East and Central African female graduate from the University of Oxford.
She joined Makerere University in 1971, as an Assistant Secretary in the University Secretary’s Office and clerk to the Makerere University Council, where she handled matters of the University Council from 1971 to 1976.
In 1976, she was transferred and promoted to the joint Administration of the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Social Sciences. She later joined public service as Director of the East African Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (EAPTC) and a member of the Legislative Council (LEGCO).
Ntiro was the first female diploma graduate from Makerere and a strong pillar in the university’s change of motto from let us be men to we build for the future.
Makerere University holds annual Sarah Ntiro public lectures in memory of Ntiro’s legacy.
