Prof John Ddumba-Ssentamu, the Makerere vice chancellor, is still raging with anger after the university’s chief security officer, Jackson Mucunguzi, was quoted by Daily Monitor speaking ill of him.
The comment, which featured in the paper’s January 5, 2016 issue, indicates that Mucunguzi undermined the economics professor’s directive of demolishing illegal restaurants within the campus.
In a letter that was wrote by Prof Ddumba on the same date, and Campus Bee has seen, afande Mucunguzi is being asked to clarify whether he indeed made the statement which reads thus:
“The police refused to effect Prof. Ddumba’s directive to demolish the kiosks. He wanted to go directly and remove them, which we can’t do. How do we descend on someone’s property without a court order? We refused. He brought other people to demolish them.”
Commenting on the matter, Makerere LCV lady councillor Doreen Nyanjura questioned Ddumba’s managerial decisions.
“We have another dictator in Makerere University. So what if Mucunguzi Japheth said those words? Is this meant to intimidate him or?” Nyanjura posted on her Facebook wall.
Prof Ddumba had earlier said that as a university manager, he would love to enjoy autonomy and not have his authority undermined in any way.
Citing an incident of last semester when he suspended students for striking over meals and the suspension was revoked, Prof Ddumba said that calling back of the students was a sign of undermining his power.
We could not get a comment on the matter from Mucunguzi as he could not pick our phone calls
