Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe has come out to comment on the allegations that Lumumba hall will be turned into a female hall of residence.
Nawangwe said Friday that he supports the idea of turning Lumumba into a female hall. He said management is still debating about the matter.
“I know there are debates on whether it (Lumumba) is going to be a female hall. It is still a debate, though, I support the side that says it should be a female hall,” Nawangwe said.
He made the remarks as he received the renovated Lumumba hall from National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) on Friday afternoon.
Nawangwe said Lumumba is a very big hall and in order to maintain it, the university needs to increase its maintenance budget for structures.
Speaking at the handover, Lubega Nsamba Vincent Mak’s current guild president said the renovation of Lumumba has caused excitement among students and the public.
“The transformation of Lumumba hall has caused significant anticipation and excitement by a sneak pic of its pictures that have been shared on social media,” he said.
Adding; “I am one who appreciates the contribution the government has done to provide us with the resources to see us having this beautiful and magnificent edifice of Lumumba Hall”.
The rehabilitated Lumumba Hall will be occupied by female students from Marystuart Hall. Marystuart Hall was closed for renovation in June.
Many students are speculating that Lumumba hall will be turned into a female hall. The Bee learned that, other than VC Nawangwe, several administrators are in support of the idea.
