Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, has suspended another academic from the institution pending an investigation into alleged irregularities in his recruitment process. Dr. Deus Kamunyu Muhwezi, a lecturer in the Department of Forestry, Biodiversity and Tourism at the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, has been interdicted from University service with immediate effect.
According to an official communication from the Office of the Vice Chancellor, the suspension follows revelations that Dr. Muhwezi was previously dismissed from Makerere University Business School and later recruited into his current position without the requisite due diligence. The decision was made as part of a broader effort to ensure the integrity of Makerere University’s employment systems and compliance with national regulations.
The letter, issued on February 10, 2025, cites section 55(2) of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 (as amended) along with the Uganda Public Service Standing Orders, 2021, as the legal basis for the suspension. During the investigation, Dr. Muhwezi is prohibited from accessing his office or any University premises, except when required by the investigation committee or other authorized University officials. He is also required to submit a detailed handover report and return all University property in his possession to the Head of the Department of Forestry, Biodiversity and Tourism.

Dr. Muhwezi will continue to receive half pay during the period of interdiction while a committee has been established to examine the circumstances surrounding his recruitment. The outcome of the investigation will determine whether further disciplinary action will be taken.
