Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe has suspended a second year student of Bachelor Arts with Education – Mr Adonia Kiiza over his involvement in demonstrations that occurred on Friday.
In a letter from Prof Nawangwe, it is alleged that the student was involved in beating fellow students, at a time when there was unrest at the University.
“Among the illegal acts which you were allegedly involved in is participation in an illegal demonstration, during which you you beat fellow students and disrupted teaching and learning activities that were on-going in the College of Education & External Studies, College of Humanities and Social Sciences as well as the School of Law calling for defiance and disruption of University activities” reads part of the letter from Prof Nawangwe, to the student.
The Vice Chancellor also noted that other culprits in the demonstrations are to be identified.
This suspension by Prof Nawangwe has drawn reaction on Social media with a section of the netizens calling it unfair and ‘abuse of democracy’
The unrest at Makerere last Friday was sparked by the delayed payment of allowances for government sponsored students. The students say, they have starved and had derisory welfare due to the delay.
