Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe yesterday sacked over 10 staff at the university Printery due to a very big decline in performance at the basement of the University Main Building.
Among the staff sacked include the technical manager and operational workers which leaves the printery capacity and operations hanging in balance due to the fact that it employs a maximum of 20 people. The sacking comes after the staff contracts expired.
Speaking to Campus Bee, some of the sacked staff said they woke up to very shocking news that they had been sacked from their jobs. University security was deployed to ensure the sacked staff vacate the university premises with immediate effect. Over the years, the staff always renewed their contracts on expiry.
It is reported that Prof Nawangwe issued communication to the staff informing them that their contracts would not be renewed and asked them to vacate the premises within the stipulated period of time.
“Please make arrangements to handover all property that belongs to Makerere University printery. Since your contracts expired you should leave the printery premises immediately,” Prof Nawangwe’s letter read in part.
The University printery provides services such as printing transcripts, staff publications, journals, books, manuscripts, and Public Universities Joint Admissions (PUJAB) forms. It also offers secure printing services of examination scripts and booklets.
