Makerere lecturer Dr. Swizen Kyomuhendo’s bad luck seems to be dragging him in deeper hot soup after the shocking documentary run by NBS television that revealed the nasty reality of how he was feasting on his students in exchange for marks. His recent bad omen is the suspension from office by the Vice chancellor of the Ivory tower, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe.
Dr. Swizen Kyomuhendo from the department of Social Works and Social Administration (SWASA) has been in trouble recently when NBSTV investigations pinned him for sleeping with his students. A section of students and alumni from the university were however bitter and wanted him to be fired and it seems their call being answered by the Vice chancellor.
Students last week petitioned the university to fire him. Today, prof. Nawangwe has put a halt to his work by suspending him from office pending investigations.
“Prof. Nawange has suspended Dr. Swizen Kyomuhendo to allow smooth investigations into allegations of sexual harassment levelled against him,’’ the university said in a tweet.
The suspension also tasked Kyomuhendo to hand over all University property to his head of department immediately as investigations continue on his case.
This came after reports that the said lecturer had tendered in his resignation from the university on being exposed by the investigative documentary. Some students agreed to his resignation but a number objected to it saying resignation only was not enough to punish him for tarnishing the image of Uganda’s biggest university.
A Guild aspirant Edward Kinene Ssemakula, in a circulated communique, said that unlike the previous incidences, this will not go unresolved and that he (Kinene) was personally willing to follow the case till the suspect received satisfactory punishment.
In earlier stories published by Campusbee, law students at the campus wanted him fired from the institution immediately.
“Disciplinary action that results in firing him sends a stronger message and sets a stronger precedent. The problem with our sexual harassment policy is enforcement. The magnitude of the crime is enough to throw him out of Makerere.” Dawood Gulam Hussein, a third year law student told our reporter.
However, the suspension clears earlier fears of the said suspect being only subjected to in-house disciplinary action. It is clear that if Dr. Swizen is found guilty of the crime, he will surely be brought to book and paint a clear picture of the atrocities and criminality sexual harassment has dug in Makerere University.
