The Makerere University Guild Minister of academics, Wanyera Simon has come out to critcisize the new report issued by the visitation committee earlier instituted by President Museveni to determine the reasons for unending strikes and other problems affecting Makerere University.
While speaking to NBS TV reporter Richard Olwenyi, the self-proclaimed revolutionary son made it clear that the majority of Makerere students did not have a way of accessing this report. According to Wanyera, him and other students have just read about the report in Newspapers, “About the report…basically, as I talk right now most of the students don’t know about the report. They don’t know about it and some of them have just been calling each other. So, even me myself, I‘ve just been reading through the newspapers and we don’t have the whole report as it is,” Wanyera revealed.
“As a student leader, and even the comments I’ve been getting from students, they are saying this report was a wastage of resources, this report has not been helpful and it has not provided ways of how issues affecting Makerere University can be overcome,” Wanyera added.
While explaining his reasons why he is against this new report regarding ghost students and lecturers, Wanyera went ahead to reveal that there are many students and lecturers who were not around campus premises when the head count was conducted, “Remember, they are talking of ghost students and staff in the report. I remember that time when they were disturbing us with head count, some students were busy, others were not within the University, so they were not counted. Some of the staff members were abroad,” Wanyera reveals.
Speaking of the new proposal to move all the art courses to other public Universities like Kyambogo, Wanyera revealed that this cannot happen at all explaining that it will not be helpful to students, “But honestly, Makerere is the mother University of this Nation, you cannot tell us you are going to take these art subjects,” Wanyera says.
While talking about the general research findings of this report, Wanyera noted that the report was a wastage of time and resources, “I am seeing so many challenges, first of all the report has not been helpful at all, it has failed to resolve the challenges this University faces. So we are expecting these challenges to continue. It has really been a big waste of time and to us students, it has not been helpful,” he noted.
