In its second edition, the Inter-University Medical Quiz challenge was held over the weekend hosted by St.Augustine International University and organized by the Federation Of Uganda Medical Students Association(FUMSA).
Running under the theme “Lifestyle modifications key to prevention of Non Communicable Diseases”, the Challenge was moderated by Doctors Yasin Ssekamatte (Orthopaedic surgeon), Emmanuel Mutuuza (pathologist and lecturer at St.Augustine international university ),Yusuf Sadik (Prof. Physiology) and Mr Ademola Suleiman (pharmacist HOD pharmacology Islamic university in Uganda Kampala campus) amongst the many others.
Busitema, Makerere, Kyambogo, Mbarara, Gulu, St.Augustine International, Islamic, Kampala International universities took part representing their different medical students’ associations and these were the final computed results after the two days session:-
Makerere University- 84%
Busitema University- 82%
Mbarara University – 80%
Islamic University- 77%
St.Augustine- 71%
KIU – 64%
Gulu University – 59%
Makerere University Medical Students Association which bagged a trophy, medals and certificates was represented by Ronald Komata, Isaac Ddamulira, Leoson Ssetaba and Walter
Mayidi.
“It was a great session to learn more about the non-communicable diseases like cancers, hypertension et al which are now a double burden for developing countries which already are suffering from communicable diseases like Tuberculosis. It was interesting because all these are being taught by our lecturers from the various Universities who were the judges,” said Andrew Kasozi, a 5th year medical student and the current FUMSA president.
FUMSA is set to chair a General Assembly between 6th- 9th next month at The Faculty of Medicine Gulu University from where a new cabinet will be selected. The general assembly will discuss issues which have a direct impact on medical students’ training, the current health status of the country and how they can contribute to the development of the society.
