The summons of two Makerere University staff members to the disciplinary committee have been terminated by the institution.
Paul Apunyo and Fatuma Nakatudde who served as the a senior administrative assistant and deputy registrar respectively at the College of Health Sciences (CHS) respectively had to appear before the university appointments committee over allegations of altering students’ marks and including unqualified students on the 2017 graduation list.
The University Secretary Mr. Lawrence Ssanyu said that by the time of issuing the summon for these two, they were not aware that the High Court had tasked the university not to take any disciplinary action to them.
The two staff members were dismissed from their duties in 2018. They went ahead to challenge their dismissal in the staff appeals tribunal which revoked the appointments board’s decision and ordered for a fresh hearing within 60 days which never happened.
They then resorted to the Civil Division of High Court which in April this year ruled in their favour noting that the attempts to prosecute the two beyond the time for the tribunal are illegal.
“We apologize for summoning you before the appointments board when there was an order of the court prohibiting the university from conducting disciplinary proceedings against your clients,” the University Secretary said in a letter addressed to the two terminating their summons.
It has been a continuous habit for staff members to sue Makerere University for issuing unlawful orders and dismissal from their jobs. In most cases, the university has lost.
