Makerere University held a two-day symposium to pay homage to Mwalimu Julius Nyerere that came to an end on October 14.
The symposium attracted a number of reputable guests among whom was the Minister of Internal Affairs Kahinda Otafiire.
Otafiire, who represented President Yoweri Museveni as guest of honour on October 14, urged Africans to unify in order to reduce dependence on European states.
The minister of internal affairs noted that what is failing Africans are fights among themselves which puts Europeans at an advantage.
Otafiire called upon youth to emulate pan-Africanists, adding that the Julius Nyerere leadership center at Makerere was created to front the ideas of Pan-Africanism.
“We founded the Julius Nyerere leadership center at Makerere University as a presidential initiative to establish a platform where the young people could learn from the elders,impart leadership skills and ideas of Pan-Africanism to young people,” he said.

The Mwalimu Julius Nyerere symposium was held under the theme: “Imagining together an African future led by Africa’s youth.”
During his lifetime, Nyerere fostered research, an ideology that is still being pushed for by The Julius Nyerere Leadership Center, a center named after him at Makerere University.

Julius Kambarage Nyerere was born on April 13, 1922, the same year his alma mater Makerere University was established.
Nyerere served as chancellor of the short-lived University of East Africa, founded the Tanganyika African National Union that was fundamental in the independence struggle, and also served as Tanganyika’s (present day Tanzania) president in 1962.
