Members of Parliament have called upon government to increase funding to public universities.
The legislators say the increment will boost research in Uganda.
The call was made as Parliament commemorated Makerere University’s 100 years of existence on September 28, 2022.
The motion to commemorate Makerere’s 100 years was tabled by Prof. Elijah Mushemeza.
During the session, legislators hailed Makerere University’s social and economic contribution to Uganda’s development.
The legislators also hailed the leaders that have served the university in different capacities especially chancellors and vice chancellors.
MPs noted that Makerere University was facing financial challenges, and this called for more funding of public universities.
Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, the deputy speaker of parliament said government should invest more in both public and private University research programs to enhance learning systems in higher institutions for them to produce more job creators than seekers.
“If we want our universities to be relevant, to not only produce products that will go on the market to look for jobs and all that, we shall need also to give them money for research so that they can design solutions for our problems,” he said.
The state minister for higher Education, Dr. John Chrysestom Muyingo called upon parliament to support Makerere University to set up a hospital of its own.
“We are also using these celebrations to solicit support for Makerere University to come up with its own Makerere University hospital, you are aware, Makerere University has been training medical doctors from Mulago, very soon, I will be coming here to present a request, I hope you do support me,” he said.
Makerere University will celebrate 100 years of existence on October 6, marking a century of social, economic, political and intellectual development to Uganda and Africa at large.
