In a bid to better engage students in matters pertaining the university guild government and other activities at Makerere University, the Prime Minister, Jothan Burobuto has introduced guild forums.
According Burobuto, who also acted as a guild president at the university for five months since March this year, forums are platforms that will be availed on a periodical basis so that students are able to meet their leaders and exchange views on various issues affecting them and also suggest ways how they can be solved.
The forums that will kick off in November 2016 will also be aiming at a leadership that is service driven, service oriented and accountable to the general students’ body.
“We want to completely seal the gap between ordinary students and their Guild Cabinet. We want them to directly realise the impact of the several ministries allocated to serve them which has unfortunately not been the case in the past,” Burobuto explained.
The guild forums will be carried out in form of moderations and outreaches and the first of its kind will take place in the university main hall.
However, sections of critics believe this is just a stunt at public relations since this government has recently been in news for several shortfalls including greed and extravagance. For example, there were cries from the public and the students’ body about the inflated budget that was passed by these leaders themselves, allocating about Shs 123million to cater for refreshments allowances.
One student, who requested anonymity, had no kind words for the motive.
“I will attend the forums. But clearly, I don’t see any good coming out of them. With the recent wave of events, this will also be like any other project they [82nd Guild] have tried to handle,” the source said
With this mixture of pessimism and optimism, we can only wait to see how it will fair.
