Makerere University 87th Guild President Shamim Nambassa has expressed her indignation towards the leadership of Uganda National Students Association (UNSA).
Nambassa pin pointed UNSA for supporting the recent protests by learners against the European Union’s proposal to stop Uganda’s oil extraction yet there are seemingly more pressing challenges in institutions of education.
“Ever since UNSA executive was captured in the state’s armpits, it has lost purpose. With all the issues affecting students from hiked school fees, scrapping of food and meals, students leadership suspensions, #stopEACOP is where they drew the line. This is was below the bar,” furious Nambassa Tweeted.
The EU Parliament recently resolved to move against the development of the proposed East African Crude Oil Pipeline.
It was against this background that on 29th September, 2022, UNSA held a demonstration against European Union Parliament Resolution on East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP).
Nambassa has had the opposite of praise towards UNSA’s participation in the campaign, citing its failure to prioritize student related grievances first.
More influential public figures like Nambassa have questioned the students’ participation in protests of such a caliber, drawing mixed reactions and sharp criticism.
Efforts to obtain a response from UNSA executive members have been futile with officials unreachable to clarify on this matter.
