The New Vision has in their appraisal and recognition of the phenomenal women that stood out in 2021, cited Shamim Nambassa, Makerere University’s 87th Guild President, as one of Uganda’s outstanding women for the year 2021.
It will be recalled that on 12th November 2021, Shamim Nambassa was elected the 87th Guild President of Makerere University, an election she won by landslide on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket.
She accordingly became the fifth female guild president at Makerere University, being preceded by Anna Adeke Ebaju, the current Soroti District Woman MP. Hon. Anna Adeke was guild president in 2013/2014. The other female guild presidents include Suzan Abbo (2007/2008), Sarah Kagingo (1997/1998) and Julian Norah Njuba, who was the first female guild president at Makerere University in 1987/1988.
Shamim has shared this recognition with other iconic women like Rtd Major Jessica Alupo – Vice President, Hon. Anita Among – Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Robinah Nabbanja – Prime Minister, Dr. Monica Musenero – Minister in the Office of the President in Charge of Science, Technology and Innovation, Brigadier Flavia Byekwaso – UPDF Spokesperson, Hon. Shamim Malende – Woman M.P (Kampala District), Ms. Doris Akol – IMF Technical Assistance Advisor & Former Commissioner General URA, Peruth Chemutai – Uganda’s first female Olympic gold Medalist (Having won the 3000m steeplechase gold at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan) among others.
