In a letter addressed to the Minister of Education and Sports and First Lady Janet Kataaha Museveni, Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe has proposed that the university should be allowed to reopen for all students under the “Blended Teaching and Learning” arrangement.
According to Nawangwe’s letter dated 29th January 2021, students can come to campus in shifts while others remain home studying online. The proposed arrangement suggests that each student group reports on campus for one month after which they will go back home and study online.
“Mama, I wish to brief you on a proposal to implement blended teaching and learning for all the students. Under this arrangement students come to campus in shifts, with each group staying for a month and undergoing intensive training, including practical work where applicable.” Nawangwe wrote.
The advantage of this arrangement, according to Prof Nawangwe, is that every student gets the opportunity for face-to-face and practical training while observing SOPs.
Students will be able to come in shifts for exams as well during the last month of the semester.
According to a proposed schedule that Campus Bee has seen, if approved by the Education Minister, first year students will be the first ones to report on campus while the rest study online. Finalists, who were expected to report this weekend physically on campus have been pushed to week 9-11 in the new arrangement, which is subject to adjustment.
According to Nawangwe, his arrangement gives students an opportunity to all students to attend face to face studies and those doing practicals are put in consideration as well.
