Robert Maseruka, the former Guild President of Makerere University, has been granted bail following his arrest during the recent youth-led protests against corruption at parliament.
The protests, organized under the hashtag “March2Parliament,” saw Maseruka and other demonstrators take to the streets to demand accountability and transparency from the government.
Maseruka was apprehended by security personnel on the evening of July 23rd outside the Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court. His arrest came as he was actively participating in the protests, which have gained significant traction among Uganda’s youth.
In a hearing at the Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court, Uganda Law Society President Bernard Oundo led Maseruka’s defense in the bail application.
The court granted Maseruka a Shs. 100,000 cash bail and Shs. 500,000 non-cash bail for the sureties, allowing for his release pending further proceedings.
The youth-led protests are expected to continue, with participants capitalizing on social media for easy mobilization.
