Today being the very final day for all Universities, schools and other academic institutions to suspend operation, Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) has officially called off the semester to meet a 32 day closure ultimatum as directed by the President of Uganda, H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
In a letter issued today (20th March), the University Secretary, Mr. Melchoir Byaruhanga instructed students to vacate the University by Friday 12:00 noon. Staff including lecturers were also directed to stay away from their offices unless called for.
“Following the H.E The president’s directive, Mbarara University of Science and Technology will close with immediate effect at 12:00 noon for students. Staff are also requested to stay away from offices except for urgent callings” reads part of the letter issued.
Further more, Examinations that were scheduled for today between 8 am and 11:30 went on as planned and students peacefully and willingly attempted them all across different faculties. However, exams which were scheduled for a date past today midday were suspended and will be done when students return later on in April.
As Campus Bee encountered some students within the university compound to have their say on the whole matter, they expressed a lot of relief for having received a mid-semester ‘break.’
“I feel so free and happier right now. This whole week has been so frustrating with so much to study and read for the fact that it was a mid-semester exams week. So, I can finally go back home and have peace-of-mind, anything to do with academics is off my mind till further notice” said one of the students at the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies.
