Most government owned University no teaching staffs have decided to go on strike following the decision to increase only lecturers’ salaries and leaving theirs out. The recent non-teaching staff to go on strike are from Mbarara University of Science and Technology who laid down their working tools today morning.
These staff revealed that their monthly pay does not compensate their work load and personal needs anymore. According to the chairman of these workers Charles Karuru, they have engaged in several discussions with the University administration regarding this matter but no solution has been made.
Unlike other Universities like Makerere and Kyambogo, Mbarara University’s spokesperson Denis Lukaya has also sided with the striking team and he advised the University to divert promotion and recruitment money into salary increment for the non-teaching staff. Lukaya reveals that the University is soon receiving recruitment money amounting to shs900 Million and should, therefore, be diverted to salary top ups.
The pressure exerted by the non-teaching staff has forced the University’s Deputy Vice Chancellor Charles Kazooba to plan for a meeting with the government as he noted that the University cannot do without its support staff.
