As students were busy casting their vote in the scorching displeasing sun on, a more interesting event charged up the prestigious University at the Senate building.
The first ever Annual Media Expo and Book fair launch took place on Friday afternoon on the 11th March 2016.
The Media Expo whose major theme is media literacy for social transformation is an initiative organised by Net Impact Uganda in conjunction with the Department of Journalism and Communications, 91.3 Capital F.M and the Red pepper publications.
The media expo launch that was attended by about 30 students will engage various media professions to ensure best practices, experiences, skills and expertise with students and academia. The President and representative of Net Impact Uganda, Tenywa Ahmed, said that the idea is to expose mass communication students to the media world. He encouraged a lot of reading and writing among students and even encouraged the involvement of others in the other faculties.
Media related activities will be organised for the Expo which will further contribute towards enhancing academic-practitioner collaboration, foster interdisciplinary dialogue, and cultivate critical thinking on different journalism and communication issues.
The expo is scheduled to take place on the 7th and 8th April 2016. Mr. Tenywa further added saying that various media related competitions shall be organised in order to test and enhance book review skills, video and photo shoot skills, artistic skills for students doing Arts in Arts as a collaboration amongst faculties.
Mr. John Baptist Imokola, the Patron of Makerere University Journalism and Communication Association called upon students to contribute to the media expo and learn a skill.
The objectives of the media expo include; to promote media literacy and professionalism among students, to promote a reading and writing culture, to expose students to various internship placements, research and job placement opportunities within the media field among others. Tess Talemwa, a second year Journalism and communication student said she loved the whole idea. “It is thoughtful of them to engage other faculties,” she added.
Dr. William Tayebwa, the head of the Journalism and Communication Department in his speech stated that the expo will indeed be a very successful one not only for the department but students as well.
Net Impact has many activities to engage the department in both locally and internationally as it works in partnership with the UN Global Compact, a branch of the UN that is passionate about the media.
The chairman, Dr. William Tayebwa launched the media expo at 5:00pm.
The launch that was to start from 2:00pm to 4:00pm started at approximately 4:00pm which was late hence excluding the physical presence of its partner, Red pepper publications ; however the event was gracefully conducted and successful.
