Medical Laboratory Scientists under their umbrella association of Uganda Medical Laboratory Technologists Association (UMLTA) have appealed to the Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Health to allow them carry out internship after their undergraduate courses.
Medical Labaratory students have joined the professionals and are support the ongoing strike so that the government can recognize degree holders and have them undergo internship as their colleagues in the same sector ie doctors, nurses and pharmacists.
According to students, the Ministry of Health has been promising to work on their issue but all in vain and that’s why they chose to follow their colleagues (Medical Interns) to demand for equal treatment.
“It is high time we talked the language that our leaders understand and advocate for not only what we deserve but also for the betterment for those that will come after us. For years the leadership of UMLTA has not been courageous enough but we are,” one of the affected students said.
Earlier this week, medical laboratory scientists working in public health centres laid down their tools demanding for better working conditions such as better payment, accommodation among others.
In response, the Ministry of Health spokesperson Emmanuel Ainebyona requested the laboratory scientists to be calm as the ministry is working on their issues.
