There was a spate of uncertainity brought about by the recent inspection of medical schools around the country which left some closed and others suspended. Among the affected was Uganda Christian University (UCU), St Augustine International University and Busitema University due to lack of appropriate infrastructure.
According to a report from the medical and dental practitioners boards and councils across East Africa that was released on Saturday, three universities in Kenya have also joined the que after being suspended due to poor facilities and some other that did not reach the minimal standards required by the East African Medical and Dental Practitioners Council in order for a dental school to operate.
These included Kenyatta University, Kenya Methodist University and Uzima University College in Kisumu which have been ordered to suspend admission of new students. The two first universities’ suspension was due to low standards while as Uzima was suspended mainly because of carrying on lectures in incomplete buildings instead of well established laboratories.
Basing on the inspection that was done between March 2nd-6th, Kenyatta University and Kenya Methodist University were ordered not to take in any new students and Uzima was closed until further notice and they were told to register their students in other universities. These are among the 13 medical and dental schools in Kenya.
The team will then continue to inspect medical and dental schools in Tanzania, South Sudan Rwanda and Burundi to cover up the whole East African region. Tanzania will be inspected from April 19th to 26th and those in South Sudan from June 15th to 19th and dates for other countries will be communicated through this same platform.
