Health workers have announced that they will be laying down their tools starting August 1st if medical interns are not deployed.
Through their umbrella Uganda Medical Association (UMA) medical doctors said they are overwhelmed by the number of patients and that interns should be deployed to lessen their load.
Dr. Herbert Luswata, UMA secretary general told journalists that everyone in the health sector will strike until government deploys medical interns.
“Not only the senior house officers who have been on strike, but everyone in the health sector is going to put down their tools until government deploys medical interns,” he said.
Dr. Alone Nahabwe (Welfare chairperson UMA) revealed that the situation is very alarming and many mothers are dying in labour because there’s no one to attend to them.
UMA has urged the ministry of finance to find the money required to facilitate interns in order to have them deployed or else all medical workers will lay down their tools.
Medical interns for the year 2023 have not been deployed due to financial challenges with the health ministry.
The permanent secretary to the ministry of health Dr Diana Atwine told prospective interns in May to apply for internship if they are willing to facilitate themselves as the ministry lacks funds to facilitate their internship.
The Bee has learnt that some interns have been deployed while others that cannot facilitate their internship are still pending.
