Mariam Iculet Arikosi is a second year student at Mbarara University of Science and Technology pursuing a Bachelors of Science in Gender and Applied Women Health. She is one of the most influential people and she has used the available opportunities to uplift herself, the university and entire country at large.
At her young age, she has fought for women empowerment through teaching, acting and involving more people to teach the young generation. She is the current students leader of the main sexual health association’s in the institution which include Youngster MUST, Medical Students for Choice, she decides to mention but a few.
She got to know about all this in her first year at campus and with the guide of her mentors she has been able to reach where she is right now. Besides women empowerment and sexual reproductive health, she’s also a student leader in the climate change project which aims on innovations towards solving the problems of climate change and she has so far campaigned for planting of over 1000 trees in the Mbarara region.
She has represented both the university and country on both national and international conferences which include: 2019 Youth Position Paper for the ICPD 25, UNESCO Workshop on SRH in Higher Education Sector 2019, 3rd Ugandan National Family Planning and many more.
She has also joined campaigns of adding family planning to the course outline of all universities because she believes that this information is needed by each and everyone. She has also engaged in teaching a big number of peer educators in the institution and she’s the current leader of the association that consists of her whole faculty of interdisciplinary studies.
She is currently organizing a conference of the UN 16 Days of Activism 2019 from 25th November to 10th December at MUST. Apart from this, she is the best student as per now in her whole Faculty and she owns the best performer’s scholarship from the administration.
