Just like any other student with big dreams of attaining a sustainable life after graduation, Alex Ogwang is not any different. He recovered his hope after obtaining UACE grades good enough to earn him a government scholarship for disabled scholars like him. In 2017, Ogwang dropped out of university during his pursue in Bachelors of Science in Chemical Engineering because he could no longer afford the tuition fees.
Last year, Ogwang decided to re-sit the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education exams at Wakiso Secondary School for the deaf and offered PCM/ICT. Later on, the day the UACE exam results were released this year, Ogwang was busy working at a construction site to earn some little money for a living.
Very good news reached Ogwang and he had scored 12 points in his previously sat exams which was similar to what he scooped on his first attempt.
“I have made it, God is great. He has not abandoned me,” excitedly gestured Ogwang through an interpreter as he bowed down to thank God while looking up to the sky. His co-workers joined him in celebrating his success.
Ogwang points out that he would love to pursue an engineering course as the university will offer him. He also adds that regardless of his disability, he can leave an influence on the society’s perception. Ogwang was among the eight students that sat UACE last year at one of the only two Secondary schools, for people with hearing disabilities in Uganda.
