Metropolitan International University Guild President Mukisa John Jackson has earned himself a suspension from the university over mobilising students to protest.
In a letter dated September 20th, 2023, the university’s vice chancellor Dr. Julius Arinaitwe suspends Mukisa from campus for at least a semester.
The suspension with run from August to December 2023 during which Mukisa is not allowed to come anywhere close to the university where he serves as guild president.
“I hereby suspend you from the university with immediate effect for one semester (August to December 2023), during your suspension, you must not come to close proximity of the university,” part of the letter reads.
The university has also withdrawn the bursary that had been given to Mukisa upon assuming office of guild president.
According to the vice chancellor, Mukisa organised students to protest on September 15 and 16th and this allegedly disrupted university activities.
The institution’s vice chancellor also claims that Mukisa did not heed to his request urging him to withdraw the protest. Mukisa was arrested last week and had been detained for quite a number of days.
Commenting about his suspension on X, Mukisa says he is being intimidated and urges all students to stand for the truth.
“I receivedthis letter today from the office of the vicechancellor about my suspension from the university. It’s not a letter of suspension but rather a letter of intimidation to the rest of the students. Always stand for truth. Expression is a right, not a crime,” he posted.
Mukisa organised a students protest on September 16th following a number of grievances that the university had failed to work upon such as penalities on late registration.
