Chaos and grief have engulfed Mbarara Metropolitan University (MIU) after a first-year student, Akankunda Desire, tragically lost her life in a fatal car accident during the university’s Guild Representative Council (GRC) rallies.
Desire, a Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) student in her first year, second semester, was reportedly caught in a reckless driving incident during the campaign procession. She succumbed to her injuries on the spot, leaving fellow students and her family in shock.
Her father, devastated by the loss, took to Twitter to express his frustration and demand accountability.
“Dear @M_Kananura @PoliceUg @mkituuma, my daughter has just perished in this reckless driving at Mbarara Metropolitan University guild campaign. Please do something and regulate these processions. I don’t want to see another parent in tears.”
The heartbreaking tweet has since sparked a conversation about the safety of political processions within universities, with many calling for stricter regulations to prevent such tragedies in the future.
