Tensions are boiling over at Makerere University after a group of students from Mitchell Hall penned a strongly worded letter to the Vice Chancellor demanding urgent clarification on the institution’s official stand regarding homosexuality.
In the letter, signed off by “Concerned Citizens, Mitchell Hall,” the students accuse the university of staying silent amid what they describe as the “growing habit of male-to-male relationships dabbed gayism.” They demand to know whether Makerere “promotes this vice or stands with us” in upholding what they call “God’s plan of man to woman only type of relationships.”

But the controversy doesn’t end there.
The residents also raised alarm over an incident involving the police reportedly firing live bullets at unarmed students during a chaotic night at the hall. According to the letter, the shooting occurred after resident students identified a suspect who later “confessed to being gay.”
“We have proof and bare witness to the uncalled-for behavior of the police where live bullets were fired at unarmed students,” the letter states, warning that such actions “not only endanger lives but also undermine public trust in law enforcement.”
The students accuse the police of unprofessional conduct and are calling on the university to take immediate action to ensure accountability. Among their demands:
- A full investigation into the police officers involved and a report on what measures the university is taking to prevent future incidents.
- Assurances of student safety, especially for those identified in the incident.
- A clear stance from the university on homosexuality and its prevalence within student residences.
- Immediate communication from administration on how students can remain safe amid the ongoing tension.
The Mitchell Hall residents insist they “stand to champion against this vice” and urge Makerere University to respond within two working days.
The letter has stirred heated debate on campus, with some students questioning the hall’s approach, while others back the demand for clarity from management.
As of press time, Makerere University had not yet issued an official response.
