Makerere University authorities have launched investigations into an incident at Mitchell Hall in which a group of students allegedly set fire to a colleague’s property following unverified allegations shared among residents.
The Sunday-night confrontation reportedly began after rumors circulated about a student’s alleged personal conduct, prompting tension and anger among some residents. Witnesses say the situation escalated when unidentified individuals dragged the student’s belongings outside and set them ablaze.

Photos and short clips circulating on social media showed a pile of burning items near the hall compound, drawing mixed reactions from students and the public.
“We just saw smoke and people shouting. The fire was intense and police had to be called,” said a student who requested anonymity for fear of retaliation.
Campus police responded to the scene and managed to contain the situation before it spread. No injuries were reported, but several items of personal property were destroyed.
University spokespersons were not immediately available for comment by press time, though sources within the administration said disciplinary investigations are ongoing to identify those involved in the destruction.
Dr. Kabumbuli, the Dean of Students at Makerere has urged students to refrain from any acts of aggression or harassment and to promptly report incidents to University Management for swift action.
“We call upon all students to exercise restraint, resolve disputes peacefully, and respect one another as members of the same community,” the statement emphasized.
