Hundreds of Makerere University Business School – MUBS students on Wednesday stormed the institution’s football pitch to vote for their preferred candidate in the ongoing guild elections. The elections were characterized by tight security following multiple striking threats from students who didn’t think it was free and fair.
Armed security operatives from Police, UPDF and Red Top Military Police were spotted on university premises monitoring the situation. A number of police officers were spotted standing next to ballot boxes trying to make sure that no one tries to tamper with the voting equipment, little did they know that some students will take off with the boxes.
A total of six candidates were nominated for this year’s guild elections by the MUBS Electoral Commission. The candidates include; NUP’s Valentine Ogwang Junior, Nomrod Kakayi, Kabaseke Edward Sempijja, Abinsinguza Arnold, Kiyega Rogers Edward, and Joseph Bagumirabingi.
Some reports indicate that MUBS’ outgoing Guild President, Ogwang Robinson helped a number of students to break through the gate after they were blocked by security from making their way into the university premises. Reports coming in indicate that the elections were halted and a new date for voting will be announced by the MUBS EC.
