Grief has engulfed the home of Mukono Municipality Member of Parliament, Hon. Betty Nambooze Bakireke, following the tragic death of her daughter, Namirembe Angella, a law student at Makerere University.
In an emotional message shared this morning, Hon. Nambooze confirmed the heartbreaking news:
“It is with profound sadness that I announce the untimely passing of our beloved daughter, Namirembe Angella, a law student at Makerere University. She has tragically lost her life in a boda boda accident this morning.”
The young law student is reported to have been on her way to attend a morning lecture when the accident occurred. Eyewitnesses say the boda boda she was riding on collided with another vehicle along one of Kampala’s busy roads, leaving both the rider and Angella critically injured. She succumbed to her injuries moments later.
Friends and classmates describe Angella Namirembe as bright, passionate, and deeply committed to her legal studies. She was reportedly in her final year at Makerere University School of Law and had dreams of pursuing a career in human rights and governance.
“She was intelligent, outspoken, and always ready to help others,” said one of her classmates through tears. “It’s so hard to believe she’s gone. She had a future full of promise.”
At Makerere, students have gathered to mourn her passing, with the Law School community expected to hold a candlelight vigil in her honor.
Leaders, colleagues, and supporters from across the country have sent condolence messages to Hon. Nambooze and her family. Many described the loss as not only personal but also national — the death of a young Ugandan woman who embodied ambition and service.
On social media, tributes have poured in from the public and political figures alike. “This is heartbreaking,” one user wrote. “May God strengthen Hon. Nambooze and the entire family during this unimaginably painful time.”
The Mukono legislator, visibly shaken, said her family was in deep mourning and asked for privacy as they process the tragedy.
“We have lost a daughter, a sister, and a light in our lives. Angella was everything a parent could hope for — kind, intelligent, and full of purpose. We thank everyone for their prayers and support during this difficult moment,” she shared.
Family sources indicate that burial arrangements are underway and details will be communicated in due course. Meanwhile, Makerere University is expected to issue an official condolence statement and coordinate with the family to honor the late student’s memory.
The sudden death of Namirembe Angella has sent shockwaves through both the political and academic communities. As Uganda continues to grapple with rising road accidents, her passing is a painful reminder of the dangers that face young people navigating the city’s chaotic transport system.
For Hon. Betty Nambooze and her family, the loss is immeasurable — the tragic end of a bright young life that had only just begun to blossom.
