Gordon Arinda, the Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality Member of Parliament has asked government to uplift Kampala International University (KIU) teaching hospital to a regional referral status that will serve the entire western Uganda region.
Arinda was speaking to a group of MPs from the health committee of Parliament while touring KIU’s western campus and medical school in Ishaka District on Friday last week.
Noting the good work done by the KIU medical students in treating people, Hon Arinda said it is a shame Bushenyi sub region – that comprises of Bushenyi town, Mitooma, Rubirizi, Buhweju and Sheema districts don’t have a regional referral hospital yet KIU’s hospital even beats most hospitals in the country.
“All we need from government is to bring in more resources and take KIU teaching hospital up as a regional referral hospital,” Arinda said.
He also wants government to acknowledge and honor the good work done by the students in treating sick people around the area.
The university committee and the MPs, led by committee chairperson Michael Bukenya were on a visit to the university to probe allegations of low staffing levels, negligence and lack of facilities
However, Arinda refuted allegations that KIU was graduating half baked medical personnel.
“It is not true that doctors training from here are of poor quality; they are actually training good doctors. Where there are weaknesses, they need our support as stakeholders,” he said.
He also asked government to resume the Primary Health Care ( PHC) funding it has withheld from the hospital this year.
The other legislators too agreed to table the issue before parliament such that KIU training hospital can be elevated to the status of a regional referral hospital.
