Mr. and Miss Universities East Africa Beauty pageant 2019 is branded a glamorous pageant, whose aim is to bring together best talents in fashion amongst university students while promoting awareness about STIs (sexually transmitted Infections).
This year’s pageant is under the theme “Taking Strides in the Fight Against STIs Among the Youth”.
While speaking to Campus Bee, Milton Obote Mwila, the national coordinator of the project noted that due to irresponsible sexual practices among the youth, they are vulnerable to getting infected with STIs.
“The Youth in Uganda are the youngest population in the world, with 77% of its population being under 30 years of age. There are 7,310,386 youth from the ages of 15–24 years of age living in Uganda. Due to irresponsible sexual practices among the youth, they are vulnerable to getting infected with STIs. Effects of STIs pose a threat not only to the future of the youth but to the general development of the country. We would like to provide a platform which will encourage open discussion, consequently annihilating stigma against the infected and the affected.” Mwila said.
Prior to the final event, all contestants will be taken to a boot camp where they will be trained extensively about STIs. During this period, different project proposals on how best they would contribute towards the fight against STIs will be reviewed.
This will be the first event of its kind that will bring together all University students in Uganda and later, all of East Africa to create awareness about STIs.
