The premier of the 5th season of MTV Shuga drama series happened on Thursday 11th May at Sky lounge.
Lead actor of MTVShugaDS Emmanuel Ikubese aka FEMI and Nigerian songbird Chidinma Ekile graced the premiere of its 5th season.
The mass media ground breaking series that aims to improve sexual reproductive health of young people will be airing on NBS television every Tuesday at 8PM. The drama series melds sexual health messaging with an enthrall plot with the aim of influencing behavioral change of young people in relation to HIV.
Speaking on the panel at the premiere, Ikubese stressed that the drama series helped him as an individual test for HIV for the first time and noted that he loves being part of the series because the show gives him an opportunity to pass on this vital message to the young people, a thing actors don’t get a chance to do. He further noted that shuga tells stories from different regions with the latest being South Africa hence the name Shuga Down South. They tell stories that young people can easily and actually relate to.
“I’m excited to be part of Shuga because it has been touching lives and actually a lot of young people have had the courage to test and get to know their HIV status. People can now have conversations with their friends and family about HIV. I actually got tested for the first time because of the show.”
Part of the audience were people of various standing from Rtd Major Rubaramira, a man who has lived with HIV for close to 32 years, city socialites, models, influencers and musicians like Navio, Geo Steady and Ceaserous.
The premiere of MTVShugaDS was sponsored by Reach A Hand Uganda, an NGO that seeks to avail young people with accurate information to better position them to make informed choices in partnership with MTV Staying Alive, NBS Television and Talent Africa among others.
MTV Shuga DS will be showing on NBS TV every Tuesday at 8pm.
